Easter Eggs

Banal store dyes and classic onion peels have become commonplace for a long time. There are more original and unusual ways for those wishing to paint eggs beautifully and interestingly for Easter. Below are the most recent ideas with step-by-step instructions. Any of the options can be pretty simple to implement with your own hands at home.

Preparing eggs for painting

Dirt on the shell will prevent the pattern from lying flat. Yes, and a factory stamp showing through a layer of paint is not the best decoration for Easter eggs. Therefore, the first stage of work will be a thorough cleaning.

To wash the eggs, you will need a container of water and laundry soap. You can also clean the shell under running water, but this is less convenient. Plus, when immersed in a container, you can immediately identify old eggs that have been stored for too long – they will float.

All dirt is removed from the shell with a dish sponge. Then the workpieces are washed under running water.

Do not use dish detergent or scented toilet soap for cleaning. The shell is only seemingly solid and dense. Its structure is porous, like a multilayer sieve. Household chemicals can penetrate the egg through these tiny holes. Such a product should not be eaten, especially by children.

If removing the stamps with laundry soap was not possible, you must repeat the procedure, but add baking soda to the water. Eggs will need to be soaked in a soda solution for 20-30 minutes, and only then scrub the prints with a brush or sponge.

The most “caustic” seals are removed with food acids (vinegar, lemon juice). They are applied to a cotton pad, and ink stains are erased. But you need to act very carefully. The acid dissolves the top layer of the shell, so it is straightforward to damage the surface. A cracked egg is not paintable.

What day do they paint?

It is believed that you can paint eggs all through Easter week: from Monday to Saturday inclusive. Exception – Good Friday, on this day, it is forbidden to do anything.

But when choosing a suitable day, you need to consider the shelf life of boiled eggs. They can be no more than two days in the refrigerator at room temperature – “live” up to 7 days. Therefore, decorating is better towards the end of the week.

Traditionally, the best days for colouring are Maundy Thursday and Great Saturday. It is on these days that the main preparations for Easter take place.

How to cook properly?

To paint the eggs, you need to hard-boil them. This is done very simply, and the main thing is to fulfil two conditions:

  • Pour cold water into a container (ladle, saucepan) and salt it generously. For 1 litre, you will need about one tablespoon (no slide). This will have no effect on the ultimate product’s flavour. Salt is necessary so that the shell does not crack during cooking;
  • Gently dip the eggs in salted cold water. Let them boil well, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 7-8 minutes. You can cook for 10-15 minutes, but in this case, the yolk will acquire an unappetizing grey-blue hue.

After cooking, you need to drain the boiling water and pour cold water over the eggs. The shell will not peel well if this is not done.

When using some natural dyes, eggs do not need to be boiled beforehand. They are prepared in the dyeing process.

Types of registration

Human fantasy is limitless. New types and styles of egg design appear regularly. But still, only four options are attributed to the classic kinds of jewellery:

  • Dyes.

As the name implies, these are hard-boiled coloured eggs. A characteristic difference is the complete colouring in a single colour, without any patterns;

  • Easter eggs.

This type includes raw eggs painted with wax and food paints. This dyeing technology is considered one of the most difficult. A pattern is applied to the shell with hot wax. After the wax hardens, the egg is dipped in cold paint. Then, with a dry napkin, remove excess moisture and paint and apply a new wax pattern. The workpiece is lowered into the next paint colour, and the procedure is repeated until the drawing is complete. The final stage is the “piling” of wax over a candle or gas burner. Due to the complexity of the process, more than 3-4 colours are rarely used in work;

  • Specks.

This technique can be considered a combination of the previous two. The egg is pre-painted in a monochromatic tone, then drops of hot wax are applied to the shell. The name “speckled” just came from the Ukrainian word “drip” (krapati). The egg is then immersed in a solution of a darker, brighter paint. The procedure is repeated several times with different shades of colour. The result of the work is cute, spotted testicles;

  • Malevanki.

The shell is painted with fancy patterns using paints. This technology allows you to create reasonably complex paintings using various subject lines (landscapes, portraits, etc.);

  • Shkryabanki (dryapanki)

On the dark-coloured shell, the desired pattern is scratched with a sharp object. It can be both simple ornaments and rather complex plot pictures.

Any of the techniques can be implemented at home, and the main thing is to act carefully and think over the final result in advance.

What can you paint with?

The answer to this question depends on the fate of the eggs. If they are used only for decoration, then you can decorate the shell with anything. For eggs, which will then be eaten, it is better to choose dyes without aggressive chemicals.

It is better to paint the product to young children, allergy sufferers and people with poor health exclusively with natural dyes. Yes, gouache, watercolours, or nail polishes will probably give brighter colours than onion peels or turmeric. But this does not mean that natural dyes cannot be used to decorate eggs originally.

Natural dyes

Before choosing a suitable master class with fresh ideas for painting, you need to find out one crucial point – the presence of allergies. After all, eggs decorated with such dyes are most often eaten. And allergies can occur to any of the natural products.

It is also worth taking care of suitable dishes. The dye does not care what to paint: the shell or your favourite spoon. It is almost impossible to wash the container from the stubborn colour. As a result, it’s a good idea to stock up on containers that you don’t mind spoiling ahead of time or use inert glass containers.

Turmeric and saffron

These spices give the shell a sunny hue. But in the case of turmeric, the eggs are light yellow, and with prolonged exposure to the sauce, golden. Using saffron will make the shell darker, closer to orange.

There are several recipes for painting:

  • Fast.

Dissolve a ground turmeric (20 g) bag in 1 litre of water and bring to a boil. Immerse raw eggs in a boiling mixture for 15–20 minutes. You can also add salt and vinegar there so that the shell does not crack. The finished product should not be wiped off from excess moisture. This will degrade the colour and leave unsightly streaks. The eggs must dry naturally. The colour is fairly pale with this procedure, which is a downside.

  • Effective. 

For this recipe, you will need boiled eggs turmeric and at least 12 hours. The spice is diluted in water in the same proportion (20 g per litre). The mixture is boiled for 3-5 minutes and then filtered and cooled for the best effect. In the resulting composition, eggs are soaked for 12 hours (more if possible). In this case, the colour of the shell will be more intense and golden. The main thing is not to overdo it with the number of blanks. If, in the process, the dyes touch each other, ugly spots will remain on the surface. In principle, even when using the first method, you can not get the eggs but leave them in the dye for the same day. But in this case, the recipe will cease to be quick;

  • For white eggs. 

The list of ingredients for this master class includes (for 1 litre of water): 8 tablespoons of saffron and six vinegar. The water should be boiled, and the rest of the ingredients should be poured over it. After 15–20 minutes, boiled eggs must be placed in the mixture and left there for several hours. After reaching the desired shade, take it out and let it dry naturally.

You can make a colour brighter and more saturated with one little trick. Rub the painted shell with a napkin slightly moistened with vegetable oil (a couple of drops are enough). The surface will become smooth and glossy without being greasy. Excess fat will be absorbed into the porous surface.

This life hack is universal; it is suitable for any dyes, regardless of colour and composition.

Beet

This root vegetable gives the shell a whole palette of shades: pale pink to deep burgundy purple. The final colour scheme depends on several factors:

  • exposure time;
  • original shell colour;
  • varieties and types of beets (boiled or raw).

A suitable recipe is selected depending on the desired shade:

  • for pink, you need to put eggs in beet juice for a few minutes;
  • For burgundy – boil in juice for 15–20 minutes. In an economical version, eggs can be cooked with whole beets in the skins, but in this case, the exposure time should be increased to 1–1.5 hours. The shade will turn out to be not so intense, but the root vegetable can then be used in a salad;
  • To soak eggs in juice overnight for bright uniform colour, adding one teaspoon of vinegar to the mixture.

If the smooth surface of the paint seems boring, you can give it a texture. To do this, instead of juice, you need to use grated beets. Either raw or boiled will do.

Eggs are covered with grated root vegetables and left for several minutes or hours to obtain the desired shade. In this case, the surface turns out to be “spotty”.

Onion peel

Onion peel is a classic method of dyeing known for a long time. The most budgetary set of ingredients:

  • salt;
  • water;
  • husk (a lot).

The step-by-step recipe has not changed for centuries.

Pour the washed husk with water to completely cover the eggs after placing them in the mixture. The pan cannot be washed, so it is better to choose an unnecessary one. Boil the resulting mixture for 10-20 minutes until a rich brown colour is obtained.

Pour a tablespoon of salt into the finished dye. Then carefully, one at a time, dip the raw eggs into the pan.  After 10-15 minutes, the dyes can be taken out. In this case, they will be brick red. To obtain a more intense shade, they must be left in the mixture until they cool completely.

The finished product will look more unusual if you decorate the shell with twigs and leaves before dying. The chosen decor is attached to the egg with a flap made of unnecessary nylon tights. The knot should be on the opposite side of the leaf.

After the staining procedure, the nylon and vegetation are removed, and a clear yellow pattern remains on the dark shell.

Hibiscus

Delicate bright red tea is also an excellent colourant. But, oddly enough, it gives the shell not crimson shades, but a dark blue, even almost black colour. Such a non-standard tone allows you to bring to life the most unexpected painting ideas: marbled, night sky, patterns, ornaments and much more.

The colouring recipe is elementary. Pour boiling water over the hibiscus, let it brew for 10-15 minutes and dip the eggs into the tea leaves.

The final shade of the shell will depend on the number of leaves and brewing time. A couple of tablespoons of tea will give a light blue colour, and using half a pack will create a rich ink tone.

The exposure time is also essential, but it does not affect the final colour as much as the strength of the brew. If the difference between the eggs lying in the hibiscus for 20 minutes and 2 hours is noticeable, the differences are no longer visible (photo below).

Having decided on the desired tone, you can proceed to decorate:

  • pure tea will give a smooth texture ;
  • by overlapping the shell with hibiscus leaves, you can get smooth stains and spots on the surface ;
  • The effect of marble chips is obtained by wrapping eggs with nylon filled with finely chopped paper. The size of the pieces should be about 5 mm, and the shape is triangular and square;

  • For a starry sky, the paper particles should be smaller and rounder. If for marble chips, the paper must completely cover the shell, then in the case of the sky, it is needed much less;

  • Abstract patterns are created using foil. She needs to wrap the egg, having previously made several holes so that the tea leaves penetrate the “cocoon”. The more folds and folds on the foil, the more beautiful and brighter the pattern will be.

Alternatively, ready-made stickers in the form of stars, flowers, etc., can be glued to the egg before painting. By removing the stickers after the image, you can get a white pattern on a bright blue background.

Decorated eggs are placed in a container filled with water so that the shell is completely hidden. The right amount of hibiscus and a tablespoon of salt is added there.

The compound should be brought to a boil for 10-15 minutes before turning off, but the eggs should be left in the dye until the desired shade has been achieved.

The finished product can be dried using a regular egg tray. However, keep in mind that the less the shell comes into touch with the holder when drying, the better (the colour will be smoother, without stains and streaks).

Combining the two previous dyes (hibiscus and onion skins) can get interesting two-tone eggs.

For this, you will need:

  • salt;
  • paper (cut, as for “marble” eggs);
  • onion peel;
  • hibiscus;
  • white eggs;
  • nylon tights.

The recipe is pretty simple.

Rinse the onion skins and cut them into small pieces (5–7 mm) of any shape. Mix with similarly cut paper. Wrap the eggs in nylon, having previously rolled them abundantly in a mixture of husks and paper. For the pieces to stick better to the shell, they need to be slightly moistened.

Tie a “bag” of nylon tightly. Place the workpieces in a container. Cover with hibiscus leaves, cover with water and add a tablespoon of salt. Cook for 10 minutes, then remove from the heat and set aside to cool (about an hour).

After removing the nylon and drying the paint, an abstract red-brown pattern on a blue background will remain on the surface of the shell. The dyeing option in hibiscus with vinegar is discussed in the video:

Kandarian

Kandarian is an entirely safe food colouring in powder form. He is completely neutral. It does not dissolve in water. Therefore it does not react with food.

This paint gives the eggs a shiny, pearlescent colour. The palette is vibrant so that everyone can choose a suitable shade. The painting process is straightforward. Kandarian is applied to the shell (rubbing) with a brush or sponge. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

Candurin-coloured eggs look festive and elegant. The surface is smooth, with a pronounced pearlescent sheen.

Red cabbage

Red cabbage can give the shell a variety of heavenly hues.

The eggs will turn light blue in 15–20 minutes. And a night spent in the broth will paint the surface in a deep blue colour. The colouring composition is easy to prepare. The cabbage is cut into large pieces, filled with 2-3 glasses of water (to cover all the leaves) and boiled for one hour.

Then the finished broth is filtered, and pre-boiled eggs are placed in it (while still hot). 1 tablespoon of table vinegar per glass of dye can be added to the colouring formula for a more lasting and bright colour.

Then you only have to wait for the colour you desire.

If the smooth surface does not suit you, you can apply any decor methods used when painting with hibiscus or onion peels.

An interesting “scuff” effect is obtained if the egg is first dipped in the broth for 15–20 minutes. Then take it out, dry it, rub it with sunflower oil, which is partially wiped off with paper napkins. The egg treated in this way should be re-dipped in the dye composition for 2-3 hours.

Madder dye

The roots of this medicinal herb can be found in any pharmacy. Their cost is not high, and it gives deep red colour. If you mix Madder with a soap nutshell, you can get a bright purple shell colour.

Colouring is standard. The roots must be washed, chopped finely, filled with water (so that the eggs can be completely immersed there) and boiled for an hour. The resulting dye must be cooled and filtered. Then eggs are immersed in the broth. For more effective colouring, it is advisable to boil them in the shade for 10-15 minutes. But in this case, you need to add a tablespoon of salt to the colouring composition.

After completing all the stages, the shell will acquire a beautiful bright colour. Madder dye is a powerful dye, and it isn’t easy to wash the dishes after it. For staining, it is better to use glass or unnecessary containers.

Blueberry

This method cannot be called the most budgetary, but if blueberries are lying around in the freezer, you can safely use them. To obtain a lilac colour of the shell, you will need frozen blueberries (fresh in spring is almost impossible to find), gauze and vinegar.

Cover a small container with gauze and put frozen berries on it. When they thaw, squeeze out the juice there (the more, the better). If the gauze breaks during the wringing process and the berries get into the liquid, the colouring composition will need to be additionally filtered.

Then add a spoonful of vinegar to the resulting dye and place the pre-boiled product there. If the juice is not enough, it is better to pour it into a glass and paint the eggs one at a time.

You should not expect any extraordinary miracles; the shell will acquire a pale lilac hue for 15–20 minutes spent in the juice, as in the photo below. For intense colouring, eggs will have to be soaked for several hours. After extracting from the juice, the dyes must be dried naturally without wiping. To add shine, after drying, the shell can be wiped off with sunflower oil.

Spinach

The spinach will come in a spring light green colour. But due to the weakness of the dye, this recipe only works with white eggs.

For colouring, you need at least 300 g of spinach per 1 litre of water. You can use both fresh and frozen herbs. Spinach must be chopped with a blender and boiled in water for 3-5 minutes. Then the container must be removed from the heat, and the broth must be cooled a little.

Pre-cooked eggs are dipped into the resulting dye. To obtain a soft shade, they must be kept in the container for at least 6 hours. A richer colour requires 12 hours of soaking or doubling the amount of spinach.

Chamomile

This workshop is also for painting white eggs. Chamomile is a relatively weak dye, so it can only give the shell a yellowish tint. A pronounced sunny colour, like turmeric, should not be expected.

Ordinary pharmacy chamomile is suitable for painting. A whole pack must be boiled in 1 litre of water for half an hour. Then add two tablespoons of salt and vinegar to the broth, and cook fresh eggs in the dye (10-15 minutes). If you take them out of the broth immediately, the shell will have a pale yellow tint. For a brighter colour, dyes should be left in the shade for 6-8 hours.

Lemon

Lemon itself is rarely used. The white shell will take on a yellowish tint if you rub a finished egg with lemon juice. But the effect is so subtle that you can tell the difference only by placing the “coloured” egg next to its white counterpart.

More often, citric acid is used. It does not change the colour of the shell. But, if eggs are rocked in a citric acid solution before staining with food dyes, a “spotted” pattern will appear on the surface. The outcome of this procedure is depicted in the image below. To implement such an idea, you will need one tablespoon of lemon per litre of water. Boil eggs in this mixture for no more than 10 minutes. But the time is counted not from the moment of boiling but from the moment the shell is immersed in water.

After removing the eggs from the acid, the dyeing process follows the instructions for the particular dye.

Orange

There are two ways to colour eggs with orange:

  • Soak them in orange juice for several hours;
  • Boil future dyes with orange peel for 15-30 minutes.

To be fair, it is worth noting that both methods are not particularly effective. The shell does take on a yellow tint, but it is very pale. Therefore, these recipes are rarely used.

Coffee

For work, you need instant coffee. Better to take the cheapest brands. They contain more dyes and preservatives of all kinds, so they give richer browns.

There are two staining options:

  • boil eggs in robust coffee solution for 10-15 minutes;
  • soak the product for 6-8 hours in a cooling drink.

When using any of the recipes, you need to take one teaspoon of coffee for each egg and enough water so that the shell does not peep out of the dye.

Nettle

Nettle is a spring herb that is one of the first to appear. Therefore, it has long been used for dyeing eggs.

Depending on the original colour of the shell, stinging nettle can give different shades: from pale green to deep brown. The dyeing time also affects the brightness of the shade. To obtain a distinct colour, you need to soak the eggs in the broth for at least 8 hours.

For pale tones, it is enough to boil white blanks in nettles for 10–20 minutes.

But it should be borne in mind that the shell does not immediately acquire the final colour. Initially, it will appear very faded. The natural colour will be visible a day after the eggs are dehydrated.

Birch leaves

Birch leaves give the white shell a warm, yellowish tint. It is useless to paint brown eggs with birch leaves, and colour changes will be almost invisible.

Both fresh and dried leaves are suitable for work. They need to fill the pan, pour the foliage with water and boil for at least half an hour. Then the broth is cooled to room temperature, and eggs are immersed in it and boiled until tender with a tablespoon of salt.

When using this dye, do not rely on bright sunny shades. The decoction of birch leaves is very light in itself. In the most intense version, it has a weak brew colour. Therefore, the eggs will not take on a saturated colour, even if they are soaked in the leaves for a day.

Green tea

Bloggers of all stripes claim that the shell will change colour to a beautiful turquoise hue when dyeing eggs with green tea.

But given the original shade of green tea, these claims raise several doubts.

According to the instructions, you need to brew 20 g of green tea in a glass of water. After 20 minutes, when the tea leaves are infused, they put an egg there and wait for the coveted “turquoise”.

By following these instructions, you can get a cloudy, greenish-brown liquid.

By immersing the egg in the dye for the indicated 20 minutes, in reality, you can get only a light yellow-green hue. The shell colour changes very slowly. The egg is coloured, but these are not turquoise shades. The experiment was terminated after 10 hours. The final shade was a greenish-brown colour with a slightly swampy tone.

The result of the experiment is that you can paint the shell with green tea, but the colour scheme turns out strange for an amateur.

Carrot juice

Carrot juice has a vibrant colour, so it is perfect for colouring eggs.

There are two staining options:

  • Process the shell with freshly squeezed carrot juice (just paint with a brush). For a brighter colour, this can be done in several steps. Each new coating is applied after the earlier one has finally dried;
  • Soak eggs for 2-8 hours in carrot juice, adding one teaspoon of vinegar.

You can also get carrot juice without a juicer. It is enough to grate the carrots on the finest grater and squeeze the resulting mass through cheesecloth folded in several layers.

By mixing carrot juice with turmeric decoction, you can play with the final shade of the shell. A mixture in different proportions will give all shades from pale yellow to a rich orange.

Grape juice

This method is not very popular due to the high cost of the “dye”. Freshly squeezed juice from dark grape varieties is best suited for the job. And finding this berry in the spring is not so easy.

Ready-made juice from a store can also be used, but it should not be nectar but 100% juice. This product will give the shells a muted pastel lavender shade. It is enough to soak the eggs in it for several hours.

Iodine

Boil eggs in iodine are not worth it. When heated, it can release substances that are not very useful for the body. If the shell breaks during cooking, the egg will become unusable.

It is easier and faster to dissolve iodine in warm water and immerse the eggs in this solution for 10 minutes. From this, the shell will take on an even light brown tint. If starch is added to this mixture, the dye will change colour to blue. For 1 litre of water, you will need two tablespoons of starch and 0.5 bottles of iodine.

Dyes from the store

Store-bought dyes are less valuable, but they are more popular. The reasons for this demand are straightforward:

  • such paints give brighter and purer colours;
  • the staining process takes much less time;
  • It is much easier to work with them. You do not need to endure unpleasant odours for hours (as when staining with onion peels or other natural ingredients), etc.

The main disadvantage of such paints is their insecurity. Yes, manufacturers claim that their products are hypoallergenic and completely harmless, but is this true?

In pursuit of original ways of dyeing eggs, you can cause significant harm to your health. Therefore, it is better not to eat such a product, especially if there are cracks and chips on the shell.

You can decorate both raw and boiled eggs. If you want a beautiful craft to serve for years, it is advisable to remove the contents of the shell altogether. To accomplish so, use a thin awl or gipsy needle to cut two holes. The first is in the “blunt” part of the egg, and the second is in the “sharp” part.

Then you just have to “blow out” the white and yolk and rinse the shell from the inside with a syringe. Another option is to “pump out” the contents with a disposable syringe. You need to choose the one with the needle thick enough.

Acrylic paints

The palette of acrylic paints is very diverse. They can be mixed, diluted, combined, creating a variety of masterpieces.

The main thing to remember is that acrylic is toxic and hazardous to health. During standard work with paints, it does not harm your health. But it is forbidden to eat it.

Do not think that the dangerous component will remain only on the surface of the shell. Penetrating through the smallest pores, acrylic paint will render both the protein and the yolk unusable. Therefore, such dyes can only be used as Easter decor.

Working with acrylics is easy. They do not flow, do not fade, and, after drying, do not stain your hands. To decorate, you only need a brush, water and the paints themselves.

White blanks are painted in several stages. To dry the layers faster, you can use a regular hairdryer. First, you need to make the background. He should choose light, not bright colours. Although acrylic paints are highly pigmented, light shades will not effectively overlap a dark base afterwards.

For the colour to lie evenly, at the first stage, you need to hold the egg with your fingers for the “sharp” and “dull” edges, carefully painting the sides. After drying the shell with a hairdryer, you must grab the “sides” and paint the “ends” already.

If the protein was removed from the shell before decorating, this work could be simplified by fixing the body on a skewer or toothpick.

Then it only remains to turn on your imagination and apply any pattern you like. Novice artisans shouldn’t swing at complex ornaments and landscapes, concentrating on the accurate and even application of a simple way. In the process, you can actively use auxiliary elements and improvised means: stickers, toothbrushes, sponges, etc.

Dye pills

Egg dye tablets are the same food colouring but pressed. It is easy to work with them, and it is enough to follow the instructions.

Most manufacturers have the exact instructions:

  1. In a glass of water, soften the tablet.
  2. Add a tablespoon of vinegar there.
  3. Place the boiled egg in the dye for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Dry the finished product.

This form of paint can be applied not only to a monochromatic coating but also to create a variety of patterns on the surface of the shell.

Potassium permanganate

You can buy this drug at any pharmacy. It is inexpensive and relatively safe. It is better to paint pre-boiled eggs without cracks. Such a product can be eaten.

Potassium permanganate is diluted in glassware. There is no precise proportion, but the solution should have a rich crimson colour. Then it remains only to dip the eggs in manganese and wait for the desired shade.

Potassium permanganate can leave burns on the skin. Do not touch the staining solution with bare hands. You need to take out the eggs with a spoon or slotted spoon and leave them on a stand until completely dry.

Zelenka

The recipe with brilliant green is similar to the master class using potassium permanganate.

The pharmaceutical product should be diluted in water, and then the eggs should be “bathed” in the resulting solution. To obtain a pale green hue of the shell, just a few drops of brilliant green in a glass of water are enough. Lovers of saturated colours can safely pour the entire bottle into the container. The main thing then is to wash everything from such a persistent dye.

This creation of local pharmacists is not so aggressive. It does not leave burns. Therefore it is used more often.

Markers

Markers are of two types:

  • ordinary, with which all children draw;
  • food, they are used to paint gingerbread, etc.

Both markers are great for drawing on the shell, but the second type is safer for health. If children or allergy sufferers decorate eggs and eat finished products, it is better to use food markers.

The pattern can be applied to both white eggs and pre-painted ones.

You can draw anything you want. The final pattern depends only on the skill of the “artist”.

Watercolour

Watercolour is not the best choice for colouring eggs. These paints dissolve easily in water, so after staining, the shell will get your hands dirty. Yes, and it is difficult to call them food.

But, if the finished product is used only as a decoration, then watercolours can create a truly spring mood. Delicate shades and smooth colour transitions look very interesting and unusual.

Gouache

The story is similar to gouache. She can decorate Easter decor, but you should not eat eggs painted with gouache.

To not spoil the valuable product, the contents of the shell can be “blown out” beforehand (as described above). Cakes and omelettes can be made with yolks and whites. And to decorate the already empty shells.

Space

For this recipe, you will need:

  • acrylic paints of “cosmic” colors: black, blue, violet – for “sky” And white, yellow or gold – for “stars” and “nebulae”;
  • sponge;
  • Brushes.

Colouring takes place in several stages:

  1. Washed and boiled eggs must be painted black with a brush.
  2. After the first layer has dried, blue or purple “spots” are applied to the black background with a sponge. You can add a little pink or gold to the colour.
  3. On dried “nebula” with a thin brush, dotted “stars” in pastel shades.

Stars can also be made with an old toothbrush. Moisten it in water, grease it liberally with paint and spray the egg, running your fingers over the bristles. In this case, it is better to work with gloves. Otherwise, you will have to wash your hands for a long time.

Ombre.

Ombre or gradient colour is a smooth transition from a pastel shade to a more saturated one. This technique is used to dye fabrics, hair, nails, and recently it has been successfully used to decorate Easter eggs.

There are two options for performing ombre.

In the first case, all the blanks are simultaneously immersed in the dye. And then, one egg is taken from the container with paint every minute. For the most part, this decor looks very stylish and original.

With the second method, a gradient is present on each egg. In this situation, the dye must be diluted according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Better to use a glass or a tall, narrow pan so that the egg can be set upright. Moreover, it should be immersed in the dye for no more than a third. For convenience, you can install a poached machine on the bottom.

Then you should wait 2-3 minutes and start gradually adding water. If you need a smooth transition, then every minute, you need to add 2-3 tablespoons of liquid. To obtain contrasting lines, you should wait for 3 minutes and add 5–7 spoons at a time.

The process continues until all the shells are hidden in the dye. After 1-2 minutes, the egg must be removed from the container and laid to dry.

It deserves noting that in most cases, the colour of the shell is chosen based on personal preferences, without reference to the secret meaning and sacred knowledge. Therefore, everyone decides for himself what colour to paint the eggs in to decorate the festive table.
