Kitchen's Interior

Ask any hostess which room in the house is most essential to equip competently, and you will almost certainly hear the answer: “Kitchen!” Women consider this place their territory and selflessly build a nest, surrounding themselves with comfortable utensils, beautiful dishes, and stylish decor. The rest of the household is also happy to sit and chat in a relaxed environment over delicious food. So a successful kitchen design is a victory for the whole family.

1. Features of the beautification of the kitchen

The first feature is due to the purpose of the premises. Here food is prepared, accompanied by high humidity and temperature, rapid and specific contamination, therefore, frequent cleaning with aggressive household chemicals.

Kitchen furniture and materials used to decorate walls, floors, and ceilings must be suitable for use in such difficult conditions. And not just relevant, but convenient and durable. Otherwise, the efforts and funds invested in the arrangement of the kitchen will be wasted.

The second feature is the division of the room into three zones:

  • Working;
  • Dining room;
  • Checkpoint.

The first zone includes storage areas for food and utensils, food preparation equipment, a sink, and countertops. To the second – seats and a table, sometimes a bar, and to the third – free space for maneuvers. The third feature of the arrangement of most Russian kitchens is the lack of space. Every free centimeter has to be used sparingly. Built-in appliances, compact furniture, and intelligent storage systems will come to the rescue here. Read about all this below, and let’s start with finishing.

2. What colors should you use?

Looking at the bare walls after renovation, the owners ask this question first of all. Although everyone has different preferences, and there is hardly a color that does not fit into the kitchen design in any way, one general piece of advice can be given.

Examples of “tasty” colors for kitchen decoration :

  • Cream
  • Wheat
  • Citric
  • Orange
  • Peach
  • Mango
  • Light green
  • Pistachio
  • Strawberry
  • Olive
  • Carrot
  • Beetroot
  • Honey
  • Walnut
  • Coffee

Now let’s talk about successful combinations of shades. To achieve a harmonious kitchen design in an apartment, follow simple rules.

Rule I – no more than three primary colors. Using one leading tone, you can create an original and bland kitchen interior in an apartment or a private house; two are a Solomon solution, and three are already quite bold.

As a background or presenter, you should not choose catchy and aggressive tones, like canary or scarlet, and in the case of a cramped kitchen, you will also have to give up the temptation to take a dark and deep color as a basis: black, dark brown, burgundy, night blue. It is better to prefer light neutral shades, to which it is easy to choose an addition: white, pale pink, pearl gray, light green, coffee with milk.

Rule II – Colors match style. For a kitchen in a modern style, bold contrasting combinations are suitable, and for an interior in a classic style, it is better to choose one leading color moreover, calm and discreet.

Each design direction implies its favorite ensemble of shades. For example, the Provence-style kitchen is dominated by soothing lavender, beige and olive motifs, shabby chic – romantic lilac, pink and powdery, loft – rugged steel, ash and brick, and eco-style – natural woody, marsh, and grassy.

Rule III – Area and geometry are taken into account. Color is a powerful tool for design, zoning, and visual correction of imperfections in any room, and the kitchen needs it more often than other rooms.

General principles of shades:

  • light cold tones push the walls apart and raise the ceilings;
  • light warm ones create an atmosphere of comfort and charge with positive;
  • dark, cold ones bring dynamics and audacity;
  • dark warm ones make the interior of the kitchen richer and more solid.

3. Recommendations for the choice of finishes

Kitchen floors have to be cleaned frequently. The material must withstand such loads, quickly and easily be cleaned of persistent oily contaminants, and not deteriorate from accidentally falling coloring products and spilled drinks.

The best options are:

  • Tile ;
  • Linoleum ;
  • Porcelain stoneware ;
  • Self-leveling floor;
  • Waterproof laminate.

It is impractical to trim the walls with one material completely. It is better to make an apron from tiles, mosaics, natural or artificial stone in the working area and install a decorative panel made of tempered glass ( skinned ). The rest of the room, which is not exposed to splashes of water and grease and is not affected by the heat from the stove, can be decorated with more accessible and simple materials.

Examples of good choices:

  • Decorative plaster ;
  • Vinyl, non-woven, liquid wallpaper ;
  • PVC or MDF panels;
  • Acrylic paint;
  • Glass wallpaper.

The ceiling in the kitchen also gets dirty. Ideally, it should be possible to wet clean it. It is also desirable that it resist the adhesion of dirt, dust, and grease.

Most suitable materials:

  • water-based paint;
  • polystyrene tiles;
  • moisture resistant drywall;
  • plastic panels;
  • Stretch fabrics.

4. Which layout to choose?

Sometimes you don’t have to choose, especially if the kitchen is tiny. But even with an acute shortage of space, you can find a convenient option for placing a kitchen set.

There can be several planning principles :

  • Linear

The working area is along one wall, the dining area is along the second, and if the passage is too narrow, you can install a folding table;

  • Parallel

The elements of the working area is divided into two equal groups and are located opposite each other, and by the window, there is a dining table or a portion of food stand combined with the windowsill;

  • L-shaped

The most popular type of layout, suitable for most small kitchens (up to 10 square meters), is a triangle with a refrigerator, sink and stove at the corners, cutting surfaces in between and a dining table opposite;

  • U-shaped

It is a very convenient way to arrange a kitchen set, but it requires a lot of space, at least 12-14 sq. m, therefore we will call it optimal for medium-sized kitchens;

  • Island

The dream of many homemakers keen on cooking, this is when a block of pedestals for cooking or eating is installed in the center of a spacious kitchen (from 16 sq. m.), and everything else is scattered around.

When dealing with the kitchen’s small size, attempt to make the most of the wall space by installing tall thin cabinets-cases and hanging cabinets.

Corner, pull-out, folding, and carousel storage systems built into the furniture set will help to expand the bins.

Adding space will allow a sliding door instead of a swing door or demolition and replacement with an arch.

5. How to choose and arrange furniture correctly?

The secret of successful placement is in the accuracy of measurements and drawing up a detailed plan. Everything should be marked on it, including sockets and lighting fixtures. Let’s say right away that the ergonomic design of the kitchen is impossible without the “built-in” assembled to order, so you need to prepare for severe expenses and a long wait mentally. To make the kitchen convenient to use, it is necessary to comply with the standards for the minimum distances between individual elements of the kitchen environment :

  • The refrigerator, sink, and hob should be located at least 130 cm from each other;
  • It is advisable to leave at least 40 cm of free space on the sides of the stove, 45 cm from the sink and a 35 cm island next to the refrigerator helps lay out food.

When placing household appliances, you also need to be guided by the rules :

  • The microwave is placed only on the countertop and no higher than 140 cm from the floor;
  • The hood is installed above the hob at the height of 65-70 cm;
  • The dishwasher is mounted no further than 90 cm from the sink. Otherwise, the wiring of plumbing communications will become more complicated;
  • A front-loading washing machine is placed no closer than 50 cm from the corner sections. Otherwise, it will be inconvenient to load and take out the laundry.

6. How to choose decor and accessories?

 Decorations and utensils should harmoniously fit into the design of the kitchen, so if you do not feel like a stylist, contact the professionals – almost always when ordering a furniture set, you can ask to supplement the project with suitable decorative and functional objects.

If you purchased a ready-made set of furniture from the catalog, look for exciting kitchen accessories in the chosen style: roof rails, magnetic knife holders, organizers for spices, mug coasters, clocks and paintings, rugs, and panels, towels and pot holders, curtains and blinds. You can see good options for the location and combination of these objects in the interior in the company catalogs.

Three important notes :

  • do not buy cheap Chinese decor items and kitchen accessories (miracle graters and other inventions from a series of life hacks) – they often turn out to be useless, quickly deteriorate and kill style by their appearance;
  • do not litter countertops with decorations, avoid open shelves with dishes – all this will create a sloppy effect, collect dust and dirt and double the effort required for high-quality cleaning;
  • Do not acquire a mountain of assorted inexpensive knives, pans, pots, baking dishes, and containers – most of them will be unnecessary. To simplify storage and avoid new expenses, it is better to purchase well-thought-out sets where items are embedded and made of high-quality, reliable materials.

7. What is essential to know about the organization of lighting?

The kitchen requires bright lighting, and preferably natural rather than electric when dealing with the kitchen’s small size, attempting to make the most of the wall space by installing tall thin cabinets-cases and hanging cabinets.

8. In what style is it better to arrange?

When choosing a style, you will have to be guided not only by the general design concept of the house or apartment but also by the kitchen area. Some modern trends seem to have been specially created to fit into tight spaces and get the most out of them. And there are also chic ones, such as Gothic, Baroque, or Renaissance, the choice of which can only be thought of by owners of spacious elite housing.

Ten styles that have consistently remained popular with kitchen designers in recent years:

  • Classic
  • Provence
  • Hi-tech
  • Minimalism
  • Eclecticism
  • Loft
  • Country
  • Modern
  • Scandinavian
  • Ethnic.

Do not let the fashion trends confuse you if they do not correspond to your ideas about the ideal kitchen. Enhance it so that you enjoy doing housework and attending family events!
