How to choose a water heated towel rail

Water heated towel rails are connected to heating or hot water supply networks, the operating parameters of which largely determine the working conditions of such devices. They serve to keep towels dry, quickly dry damp things, maintain a favorable microclimate in the bathroom, and are a full-fledged interior detail.

If in aesthetic preferences everyone relies on their taste, then in terms of technical characteristics, it is better to listen to the opinion of experts. The rules for choosing such household equipment and its design features will be discussed in the next section of this article.

Heated towel rail material

The owners of specialized stores offer the buyer heated towel rails of the most different price categories. The cost of such a product depends on the brand and quality, but in most cases depends on the material used. There are several options.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel has several excellent qualities. It can withstand high loads and does not break when the ice has frozen in the pipe expands. She has good heat dissipation. The material successfully resists corrosion even in many salts in the water, which shifts the acidity index away from the norm.

Such heated towel rails easily fit into a modern interior, having polished surfaces or a thin chrome layer applied outside. They are pretty expensive but have a long lifespan. Most of the responsible manufacturers give their products a 3 to 5-year warranty.

Non-ferrous metals

Heated towel rails made of copper alloys are in a price category close to stainless products. Brass does not rust for tens or even hundreds of years. It possesses excellent thermal engineering properties, successfully withstands loads associated with thermal expansion and water hammer.

Almost no automatic deposits are deposited on its inner walls. Copper tarnishes over time, so the outside of such devices is often coated with nickel or chrome.

Black metals

Heated towel rails made of carbon steel are a good budget solution since they are several times cheaper than brass and stainless steel. To reduce corrosion, they are usually galvanized or coated with resistant enamels, which only prevent the appearance of rust for a short time.

New devices in this category do an excellent job with the heating function. Still, scale and mechanical deposits settle on their inner walls over time, reducing the free area and overall heat transfer. Every year after installation, the risk of leakage increases, so this option should be considered temporary.

Operating pressure

When buying a heated towel rail, it is vital to make sure that it is rated for a pressure slightly higher than the parameters of your system. Do not be too lazy to look at the product passport.

Owners of individual cottages with their heating systems find themselves in a more advantageous position. They can regulate the mode of circulation of the coolant, which for low-rise buildings is usually maintained at a level of 2-3 bars.

Connection diameter

The vast majority of heated towel rails have standard sizes of fittings for connecting to supply lines. They range from ¾ to 1 ½ inch. When laying a new district heating system, this parameter is not decisive.

In the case of replacing an old device with a new one, it is better to focus on the diameter of the existing pipes to simplify the work. Otherwise, you will have to use adapters, which do not constantly improve the product’s appearance.

Connection type

Depending on the specific situation with the location of existing pipes or the designer’s intention, heated towel rails are mounted in different ways. Models are available that are conveniently connected to vertical, horizontal, in-floor, or behind-wall pipelines. Let’s consider the typical options.

Bottom connection

The inlet and outlet pipes are at the bottom. Hot water under pressure rises into the coil, from where it flows into the return pipeline, having previously given off the required amount of heat.

Top connection

It is convenient to connect such heated towel rails to pipelines laid under the ceiling since the inlet and outlet fittings are located on top of them. This option is more suitable for coils with a single flow tube. In more complex, branched structures, there is a risk of stagnation.

Side connection

The most common method involves feeding on a vertical pipe located on the side.

Diagonal connection

Here, the inlet and outlet of water are in opposite corners of the structure, located diagonally from each other. This option is considered the most efficient from the energy point of view, but it complicates the piping scheme somewhat.

Heated towel rail shape

There are three-dimensional heated towel rails with a large heat exchange area installed on the floor. They are not widely used due to their large size. The bulk of this type of equipment is flat, convenient for wall mounting.

Sometimes they are made in ladders, shelves, or equipped with pivoting links that allow you to change position depending on the situation. They are usually not cheap and evenly warm-up only with a significant pressure drop in the direct and return pipes.

The best heat transfer under any conditions is demonstrated by single-pipe models, the coil of which is bent in the form of a regular flat figure. For small to medium-sized bathrooms, it is convenient to purchase small heated towel rails that resemble letters.

П – shaped

The compact welded model with clear corners is easy to manufacture, inexpensive, and suitable for a strict interior.

M – shaped

The version with gentle curves and a large enough surface area is suitable for any room.
